I saw an amazing thing and here are SOME photos. Driving down Vernon street, coming home, i saw a red tailed hawk in the center of the road where it had just killed a squirrel. I just missed the kill but as my car slowed down to see this amazing hawk , and i was awe struck at being so close, the hawk tried to lift the squirrel and fly away. But the squirrel was too big he flopped over to the sidewalk and dropped it.

He hovered over it protectively then flew onto the fence post fearlessly. He didn’t even care that i pulled the car into the driveway.

This photo is gorgeous, but hard to see. Hard to find the hawk against the bushes! Such a disguise.  Isn’t he beautiful?

Then he had to think. He waited thinking how to carry away the squirrel when it was too heavy for him to lift in flight. No one came down the street except cars and he knew cars stayed on the roads. Finally he dropped to the sidewalk and began to eat.

I didn’t see all of the meal devoured i think what he did was hungrily eat some maybe half and when it was lighter in weight he flew away with it. Nothing was left on the sidewalk to slow this astonishing event. I am left in awe of the beauty and strength of the Hawk, of its intelligence, of the inexorable terribleness of the need to kill, to eat, to survive.
