THE ART CROWD (1973)

AUTHOR'S INSIGHTS
THIS BOOK, MY FIRST NONFICTION BOOK, WRITTEN WHEN I WAS 33, BECAME A BESTSELLER AND ROCKETED ME INTO CELEBRITY SO TERRIFYING THAT I FLED! ITWAS REVIEWED NOT ONCE BUT TWICE BY THE NEW YORK TIMES, AND MAGAZINES WANTED ME TO WRITE MORE ABOUT THE ARTWORLD. I DIDN'T WANT TO WRITE ABOUT ART; I WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST. I STILL OCCASIONALLY PROVOKE A SHOCK OF RECOGNITION FROM CERTAIN PEOPLE MEETING ME: "MY GOD! YOU WROTE THE ART CROWD!"

MY FAVORITE COMPLIMENT? FROM A NASTY REVIEW IN NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE NAMING ME "TROGLODYTE PHILISTINE!"

IT CREATED A STORM, BLOWING THE ARTWORLD APART.WHY IS ONE PAINTINGWORTH A MILLION DOLLARS AND A SIMILAR ONE WORTH NOTHING? THIS BOOK IS GOSSIPY, WITTY, SATIRIC INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING. IT EXPOSED AND RIDICULED THE RAMPANT CORRUPTION IN THE CONTEMPORARY ART MARKET. THE ART CROWD IS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE ARTIST HAS FINISHED PAINTING, AND THE FIVE GROUPS – DEALERS, CRITICS, COLLECTORS, AUCTIONS AND MUSEUMS, EACH WITH ITS OWN AGENDA – DETERMINE WHAT IS ART? FOR A BRIEF PERIOD, MY BOOK CHANGED THE WAY AUCTIONS DID BUSINESS, THE WAY NEWSPAPERS COVERED THE ARTWORLD, AND THE WAY CRITICS CHARGED FOR THEIR REVIEWS. IT CHANGED THE WAY PEOPLE THOUGHT ABOUT ART. LONG OUT OF PRINT, THE ART CROWD IS A COLLECTOR'S ITEM.
