REVELATIONS (1992)

AUTHOR'S INSIGHTS
THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL AN "OLD-FASHIONED READ." FULL OF CHARACTERS, PLOT,
LANDSCAPE. IT'S ABOUT A MAN, THE RECTOR OF A COUNTRY CHURCH, WHO HAS A
MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE – AND AFTER THAT HE IS SO CHANGED THAT THE COMMUNITY RISE UP AGAINST HIM AND BRING HIM UP ON HERESY CHARGES. THE WHOLE LAST HALF OF THE BOOK IS CHARGED WITH CONFLICT BETWEEN THE LAWS OF GOD AND LAWS OF MAN.

MY FAVORITE TWO COMPLIMENTS ABOUT THIS BOOK? I GAVE A TALK IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ONCE, WHEN A MAN CAME UP AND INTRODUCED HIMSELF. HE SAID HE WAS ON THE VESTRY OF HIS CHURCH, THAT THE MINISTER HAD RECENTLY BEEN DISCOVERED HAVING AN ADULTEROUS RELATIONSHIP WITH ONE OF HIS PARISHIONERS AND THAT THE VESTRY WERE ABOUT TO FIRE HIM WHEN ONE OR TWO AND THEN OTHERS READ MY NOVEL, REVELATIONS. THEY VOTED TO KEEP HIM ON.

THE OTHER CONCERNED A YOUNGWOMAN WHO CAME TO A READING I GAVE IN LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA, CLUTCHING HER WELL-THUMBED COPY OF REVELATIONS TO HER HEART. "WAS TOM A REAL PERSON?" SHE ASKED; AND THEN WISTFULLY: "I'VE READ YOUR BOOK THREE TIMES. I WISH I COULD MEET HIM."

"BURNHAM IS A GORGEOUS WRITER, THE FULL PALETTE, LIGHT AND DARK… SHE DESERVES A READERSHIP AS BROAD AS HER TALENT." – LOS ANGELES TIMES

"A CONTEMPORARY JANE AUSTEN. WHAT A BOOK - I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. ANY READER WILL BE SWEPT UP IN THE DRAMA OF SACRED AND PROFANE LOVE. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN." – LEE SMITH
